With MSU Hillel Spartan Start, you’ll move in two days early and jump right into the Spartan experience. You’ll be grouped with other first-year students and guided by incredible student leaders and Hillel staff who’ll help you navigate campus, make fast friends, and discover everything MSU has to offer—before classes even begin!

How many spots are available?
Since this will be the very first year of MSU Hillel’s Spartan Start, we’re capping participation at just 50 incoming students. Spots are decided through a lottery system. Students will register their name into the lottery, and winners of the lottery will be notified by email by July 2nd. If you receive a spot, you must confirm your participation. Students not given a spot will join a waitlist. If spots remain open, we will go down the waitlist with open spots. If you do not receive a spot, your $50 donation will be refunded. ​
Is MSU Hillel Spartan Start Free?
Pretty much, thanks to the generosity of the Byron & Dorothy Gerson Innovation Fund! To reserve your spot at MSU Hillel Spartan Start, we’re asking for a $50 donation. That covers everything—meals, activities, swag, and your early move-in fees. It’s a small investment for a huge head start on your Spartan journey and your deposit goes directly back into supporting Jewish student life at MSU.

I’m not religious, is MSU Hillel Spartan Start for me?
Absolutely! In fact, many of our students identify as culturally Jewish or “Jew-ish.” Our programs are designed to be welcoming and inclusive—whether you’re looking to explore your identity, make new friends, or just enjoy some good food and great community. While we do offer opportunities for religious connection, most of our events are all about culture, community, and fun.

My roommate isn't doing MSU Hillel Spartan Start… should I still do it?
For sure! Tons of people don’t have Jewish roommates, and that’s totally okay. Even if you’re super close with your roommate, it’s actually really nice to have something that’s just yours. Spartan Start gives you a chance to meet new people and build your own group of friends. Plus, you can always introduce your roommate to your new friends later!
What should I expect at MSU Hillel Spartan Start?
We’re putting together an action-packed schedule filled with exciting activities to help you dive right into Spartan life! To kick things off, we’ll host a family BBQ, where you’ll get a chance to check out Hillel, share a meal with your parents before they head home, and meet the student leaders who’ll be with you every step of the way.
The next day will be packed with fun programs, including campus tours, delicious meals, a resource fair, and plenty of get-to-know-you activities. You’ll also have the option to join in on things like challah baking, sports, crafting, and much more! And of course, you’ll walk away with some awesome swag just for being a part of it!

When can I register?
Our application to register will open on May 1st, 2025. Check this page for updates then.

When is the deadline to register?
The deadline to register is June 30th, 2025 at 5 PM. Participants will be picked through a lottery system and informed on July 2nd, 2025. To secure your place in the lottery, you'll need to submit the $50 donation with your registration. This will be returned if you do not receive a spot in the program. Questions?
